Developmental Milestones

Gross Motor Milestones

It is very well-known that all infants develop their gross motor skills at various ages and each baby is different!!! However, we also know that there are some general guidelines for the typical developmental of gross motor skills as babies grow. Developmental milestones are things that most babies (75% or more) can do by a certain age. Here are some of the gross motor milestones:

2 months

  • Able to lift head off floor when on their tummy
  • Able to move their arms and legs
  • Able to turn their head to both the right and left sides

4 months

  • Able to push up onto their elbows when on their tummy
  • Holds onto a toy when you give it to them
  • Brings their hands to their mouth
  • Starting to try to roll from their tummy to their back

6 months

  • Rolls tummy to back
  • Rolls back to tummy
  • Pushes up onto straight arms (i.e. elbow are straight)
  • Starting to prop on their arms in a sitting position

9 months

  • Able to push up into a sitting position on their own
  • Able to sit on their own (you feel comfortable leaving them in sitting)

12 months

  • Moves easily up onto hands and knees
  • Crawls on hands and knees
  • Pulls to stand
  • Starting to cruise along furniture

15 months

  • Starting to take steps on their own without any hand/arm support

18 months

  • Able to walk comfortably on their own without any assistance

Are you concerned about your child's gross motor milestones?

If a child is failing to meet early developmental milestones like lifting their head, reaching, rolling over, crawling and even walking , there could be multiple explanations.

Issues with muscle tone are common in children and are often noticed by parents and caregivers before they’re diagnosed by medical experts.

Parents and caregivers should trust their instincts and talk to their child’s health care provider about their concerns.

Please reach out and feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns about your child's early motor development.
